Manufacturng Process
Our mill stands as the largest integrated bagasse (sugarcane waste fiber) based paper mill in the world.
Bagasse” is the name given to the discarded husks of the sugarcane plant after they have been pressed to extract the juices which are refined to make the sugar we use everyday. This agricultural waste is very plentiful – the USDA estimates that approximately 160 million tons of sugar is currently being produced, and 78% of this sugar is made from sugarcane plants. Our partnerships with surrounding sugar mills and farmers ensure that we have an ongoing supply of this readily available renewable resource. Our mill recovers this agricultural waste fiber that would otherwise be burnt or discarded, and uses it to produce high quality paper for everyday office use, commercial printing, and converting at a rate of over 700 tons per day. Making use of agricultural waste fiber like bagasse represents the future of the global paper industry as a critical environmental solution. Deforestation has released an estimated 120 billion tons of global warming gases into our atmosphere. Paper that is made from tree based fiber can only be recycled up to 6 times before the fibers degrade to the point where they can no longer be reused. While recycling is critical, utilizing agro waste fiber can prevent us from having to go back to the forests for more raw material for papermaking. Canefields sugarcane waste fiber based paper helps to take the pressure off our forests.
We have perfected environmentally friendly, innovative, and unique facilities and systems for the preserving, handling, processing and pulping of recovered sugarcane waste fiber. For over 22 years, our Research and Development technology advances have ensured that we remain leaders in high quality sugarcane paper production dedicated to environmental excellence and corporate social responsibility.During the sugarcane paper manufacturing process, renewable “green” energy is used to power the facility. Our wind farm and agro waste / biomass co-generation combine to supply the mill with over 50 MegaWatts of power. Excess green energy of up to 10 MegaWatts is passed on to the main grid for house hold usage. Canefields eco friendly paper products are manufactured carbon neutral. The use of a Closed Loop Water System and an Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) paper cleaning system ensures that our manufacturing processes offer the best environmental standards in practice today. This Closed Loop Water System addresses a critical environmental issue relative to the process of papermaking. ECF bleaching can be environmentally damaging if mill wastewater, or effluent, containing chlorine compounds like dioxins is discharged into local waterways. Our effluent is 100% purified at our mill owned and operated water treatment facility. This purified water is then reused as process water and is also utilized for irrigating the otherwise arid land surrounding the mill. We believe that our Closed Loop Water System exceeds Total Chlorine Free (TCF) and Process Chlorine Free (PCF) bleaching environmentally, and it enables us to produce world class papers at highly competitive prices.Canefields sugarcane paper is produced landfill free. The solid waste bi-product of the papermaking process is converted to high quality concrete. Our manufacturing processes are ISO9001 and ISO14001 certified. We are approved and registered by the United Nations Framework on Climate Change (UNFCC). The mill trades more than 160,000 metric tones of carbon credit per year.
