Environmental Efficiency in Paper Manufacturing: Addressing Greenhouse Gas Emissions & Climate Change
HOW CAN A
SIMPLE PRODUCT LIKE COPY PAPER MAKE A DIFFERENCE ?
Environmental Efficiency is the fundamental concept at work
behind everything that
goes into Canefields Sugarcane
Paper. Our goal is to systematically address all contributing factors
of greenhouse emissions from the papermaking process. Power: Canefields Paper is produced at a manufacturing facility powered by renewable energy including Wind and Biomethanation.
Deforestation: Canefields Paper makes use of readily available sugarcane agro waste from papermaking, thereby preserving the “lungs or our planet” – the forests.
Industry
& Transport: Canefields Paper is manufactured carbon
neutral and Canefields USA deliveries are carbon neutral.
Agriculture: By using sugarcane
waste as our fiber source, we prevent it from being burned and releasing "black carbon".
Other Energy: Canefields Paper Mill supplies excess green energy to the grid.
Waste: Canefields Paper is manufactured landfill free.
CANEFIELDS SUGARCANE PAPER & THE
ENVIRONMENT All Canefields sugarcane paper products proudly display the “Enviro-Logos” shown and described below.
These symbols let our distributors and end consumers know they are purchasing what many consider
to be the most environmentally friendly line of paper products available in the world today.
Wind
Power Symbol – Canefields papers are manufactured at a facility that operates on renewable energies, such as
wind power. The mill-owned and operated wind farm generates over 35 Megawatts, helping to power the manufacturing facility
and supplying excess energy to the grid. BioMass Symbol – Our wind energy is supplemented by environmentally
friendly agro waste fuel co-generation which creates an additional 15 Megawatts. This combined 50 Megawatts of renewable,
eco-friendly energy powers the paper manufacturing facility, and excess energy of up to 10 megawatts is passed on to main
grid for house hold usage. Sustainability Symbol – Canefields paper is made using sustainable,
renewable agro-waste. Recovering agricultural residues like sugarcane fiber from the waste stream for the manufacture of high
quality / high performance / high production paper represents the future of our industry, and the future is here. Canefields
papers are fully recyclable, biodegradable, compostable, and renewable.
Infinity Symbol – Canefields papers are acid free / permanent for archival life. Our high
performance office papers and paper products are trusted around the world by governments, educational institutions, and businesses
of all sizes and descriptions. PURE Symbol – The Canefields paper manufacturing process
utilizes a Closed Loop Water System and Elemental Chlorine Free bleaching. 100% of the mill effluent, or wastewater, is purified
at the mill-owned and operated water treatment facility. This process removes 100% of any residual dioxins arising from the
ECF bleaching process. This purified wastewater is then re-used to irrigate the otherwise arid lands surrounding the mill.
This area would not be capable of sustaining vegetation, but as a result of the irrigation system, the mill has established
a robust eucalyptus plantation. This represents the gold standard in sustainable forestry – creating life where none
existed before, instead of removing old-growth forest and replacing it with tree farms. Canefields paper is made up of a minimum
of 75% bagasse (sugarcane waste), and the balance consists of this eucalyptus fiber from the mill plantation. This eucalyptus
fiber is added in minimal quantities to enhance quality and performance characteristics such as brightness, sheet stiffness,
and moisture balance. Carbon Neutral Symbol – Canefields papers are manufactured carbon
neutral. As a registered member of the UNFCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change), we actively trade our
carbon emissions control credits. The Canefields mill is a landfill-free / zero waste manufacturing facility. To achieve this
and to make maximum use of available resources, we have developed a method to produce high quality concrete from the solid
waste bi-product of our paper manufacturing process. The Canefields mill integrates multiple levels of the society and economy
by virtue of this concrete manufacturing, the eucalyptus plantation, and its general operations. We have worked very hard
to develop a far reaching Corporate Social Responsibility program that enriches the lives of others through rewarding employment,
healthcare, education, and camaraderie with our communities. As a government owned business entity, TNPL has a deep sense
of responsibility to our fellow citizens that manifests in all we do. Agro-Waste Recovery Symbol
– Canefields papers make use of readily available sugarcane waste fiber for the production of high quality office paper
and converted paper products. This environmentally friendly fiber source combined with recycling can help eliminate deforestation,
which accounts for 20% of the world’s greenhouse gases. This is critical as we work to address climate change: wood-based
paper fibers can only be recycled up to 6 times before we must go back to the forests for virgin fiber. Recovering agro-waste
for papermaking presents a highly efficient and effective solution. Canefields paper utilizes this waste fiber without compromising
quality and performance, ensuring maximum customer satisfaction in any world market.
ISO Symbol – Canefields papers are produced at an ISO 9001 / 14001 certified paper manufacturing
facility.
TNPL –
Canefields papers are manufactured at Tamilnadu Newsprint & Paper Limited (TNPL) located in Chennai, India. TNPL is the
largest producer of bagasse (sugarcane waste fiber) based paper in the world, and is owned by the Government of India.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTS
In the US alone, one billion trees are taken from forests
to produce a yearly average of 735 pounds of paper per American. It is estimated that 5.4 million tons of office paper are
consumed each year in the US. Only 5% of US virgin forests now remain, and deforestation has released an estimated 120 billion
tons of global warming gases into our atmosphere. Less than 1% of the paper consumed in the US contains any fiber that did
not originate from trees, even though we generate enough agricultural residues to produce all the paper we currently consume.
Worldwide, consumption of wood products has risen 64 percent since 1961. The industry expects that demand will double by 2050,
keeping pace with population growth. Recycling the paper we consume is very important, but it cannot solve this problem –
wood based paper can only be recycled up to 6 times before the fibers break down and can no longer be used to make paper.
The need is urgent to embrace readily available agricultural waste fiber and environmentally friendly manufacturing methods
for the production of high quality paper. We hope you will join us in our work to play an active role in ending deforestation,
and bring change to the global paper industry. The following
environmental impact estimates were made using the Environmental Defense Fund Paper Calculator. For more information, visit
